In November, Apollo organized a three day financial literacy workshop for a group of 7th & 8th grade AVID students. The financial literacy workshop was set up for the students to role play in a game of life with adult responsibilities such as paying taxes & bills! We introduced the concepts of Investing vs Saving vs Spending to the kids. The objective was to grow their financial skills by teaching the benefits of investing.
In the game, the kids had to collect their salary as professionals such as teachers, engineers, and doctors. Then, they would go to pay taxes, bills, and household expenses. After that they were given the option of investing in stock or rental houses, spending at the store, or saving their money. At the end of the game, after 4-6 rounds, we cashed out every stock or house they purchased for double what they bought them for. The goal of the game was to make the most amount of money. Students kept the money they earned on the last day!
Here are some snapshots of our financial literacy workshop!
